Western Onion is based in Camarillo, California. To meet new buyers in their key markets of Mexico and Central America, they joined the 2021 WUSATA Mexico Outbound Mission to Mexico City and Monterrey, which also included buyers from Central America. The trade mission was coordinated by the Global Connect program of the Western United States Agricultural Trade Association (WUSATA) and funded through the USDA’s Market Access Program (MAP). As a result of their participation, Western Onion secured deals with one new retail and two new wholesale distributors. They finalized $60,000 in initial sales at the event and estimate a further $300,000 in sales to be completed with the new distributors for the 2022 crop.
Pedro Rodriguez, International Sales Manager, explains why working with WUSATA is valuable for their export program: “Even if we contacted these buyers on our own, the response would not be as good as when it's organized through WUSATA. WUSATA introductions are stronger, and it’s safe to say I would not have met with them otherwise.”
Western Onion was founded in 1993. As a grower, packer, shipper, importer and exporter, Western Onion offers customers sweet California onions from mid-April through October.
