Wheel Line Cider’s First International Sale with WUSATA Support

"You are developing relationships and that takes time."

Since 2020, Susie, owner of Wheel Line Cider, has actively participated in both outbound and inbound missions, where she engaged with diverse buyers, initiating the process of forging meaningful connections. As Susie wisely acknowledges, “You are developing relationships and that takes time.” This patient and strategic approach underscores the importance she places on nurturing enduring partnerships, which are fundamental to long-term success.

In March of 2023, Susie attended FoodEx in Tokyo, Japan. FundMatch aided Susie in traveling to this international trade show, ultimately saving her small business money on travel costs, promotional giveaways, and securing a trade show booth. After FoodEx, Susie took advantage of the opportunity to meet with more potential buyers with whom she had built a rapport within South Korea.

Susie and her team achieved their first export sale to South Korea. They exported 60 cases comprising three different varieties of ciders, with the anticipation of further purchases in the future. Susie’s been able to navigate export interest from market resources provided by WUSATA. “WUSATA always prepares you for the country you are entering,” said Susie. “They also give you data on the economy, growing trends, and bring you to markets so you can see what products they are currently carrying.”

In anticipation of forthcoming success, Susie has been able to make strategic investments aimed at increasing and expanding the production of Wheel Liner Cider. Her orchardist has transitioned to a full-time role, with plans to hire another full-time employee soon, thereby facilitating the overall expansion of production capabilities. Additionally, Susie has made significant investments, including the purchase of new equipment such as additional cold storage, a new automated press, and transitioning from hand-bottling to a bottling truck. These upgrades are poised to streamline operations and enhance efficiency, positioning Wheel Liner Cider for continued growth and success.

The future holds great promise for Wheel Line Cider. Through ongoing efforts, Susie is cultivating valuable relationships with contacts she has met at WUSATA events. With momentum growing, Wheel Line Cider is on the verge of securing future sales through exports in the coming years.
